B.B. King: Live recordings in review
By Eberhard Fritz
This is an attempt to compile information about the live recordings of the great B.B. King. It is at no means complete and will be updated if I will be able to obtain more of those soundboard and radio recordings.
Included in this compilation are the official live recordings on albums and Maxi CDs. It is out of question that some radio broadcasts surpass the official live albums.Any track which was not recorded in front of an audience was not included even if it was played ‘live’. Given playing times are approximate and are only supposed to indicate the length of the song.
Thanks to the great people who contributed to that compilation:
Ramon Gonzales
Rainer Zepernick
and all the others who were so kind as to trade with me.
21 November 1964 Chicago, Illinois, Regal Theater
Every Day I Have The Blues (2:27); Sweet Little Angel (4:15); It's My Own Fault (5:25); How Blue Can You Get? (3:00); Please Love Me (2:55); You Upset Me Baby (2:20); Worry, Worry (6:21); Woke Up This Mornin' (1:42); You Done Lost Your Good Thing Now (4:10); Help The Poor (2:35).
Officially released album LIVE AT THE REGAL. Generally acknowledged as THE classic B.B. King live album the Regal recordings represent an era when he played shorter songs. Later on he stretched the songs and emphasized his qualities as an entertainer. It depends on which attitude the listener actually prefers.
5 November 1966 Chicago, Illinois, International Club
Introduction (0:19); Waitin‘ On You (2:29); Introduction (0:49); Gambler’s Blues (5:12); Tired Of Your Jive (3:32); Night Life (4:48); Buzz Me (4:13); Don’t Answer The Door (4:10); Blind Love (3:33); I Know What You’re Puttin‘ Down (3:36); Baby Get Lost (4:00); Gonna Keep On Loving You (3:46).
Officially released album BLUES IS KING...PLUS. Some rarely played songs on this one.
3 June 1969 New York, Village Gate
Don’t Answer The Door (6:13); Just A Little Love (5:16); My Mood (2:42); Sweet Little Angel (5:13); Please Accept My Love (3:20.
Officially released album LIVE & WELL. Two rarely played songs on this one.
10 September 1970 Chicago, Illinois, Cook County Jail
Introductions (1:51); Every Day I Have The Blues (1:42); How Blue Can You Get? (5:12); Worry, Worry (9:55); Three O'Clock Blues/Darlin' You Know I Love You (6:18); Sweet Sixteen (4:20); The Thrill Is Gone (6:18); Please Accept My Love (3:61).
Officially released album LIVE AT COOK COUNTY JAIL. A truly great live album recorded in front of more than 2,000 convicts imprisoned in Cook County Jail. B.B. King delivers an outstanding performance!
4 March 1971 Tokyo, Japan, Sankei Hall
Every Day I Have The Blues (2:10); How Blue Can You Get? (5:11); Eyesight To The Blind (4:03); Niji Baby (6:21); You're Still My Woman (5:56); Chains And Things (5:41); Sweet Sixteen (6:00); Hummingbird (4:08); Darlin' You Know I Love You (4:26); The Thrill Is Gone (5:36); Hikari #88 (7:57).
Officially released album LIVE IN JAPAN. Another great live recording, this was originally available in Japan only. But now it has been released elsewhere, and for good reason. Like in Cook County Jail, B.B. King is in brillant form on those two gigs in Japan!
7 March 1971 Tokyo, Japan, Sankei Hall
Japanese Boogie (9:11); Jam (9:35).
Two more tracks on the officially released album LIVE IN JAPAN.
August 1972 Kansas City, Kansas, Cowtown Ballroom
Introduction (3:24); The Thrill Is Gone (5:00); Sweet Little Angel (5:06); Nobody's Loves Me But My Mother (4:45); Guess Who (3:45); King's Shuffle (3:12); Outside Help (7:35); I've Got A Mind To Give Up Living (5:27); Ain't Nobody Home (7:23).
Semi-official release LIVE IN KANSAS CITY. This is a very good album, although the sound quality is a little below standard (but very listenable).
4 November 1973 Berlin/Germany, Berliner Jazztage
Everyday I Have The Blues; How Blue Can You Get; To Know You Is To Love You; Crying Won't Help You; I Need My Baby; Outside Help; When The Saints Go Marching In; Instrumental; Instrumental; All Over Again; The Thrill Is Gone; Guess Who..
Obviously a very good soundboard recording.
24 May1974 Stockholm, Concerthouse TV

30 October 1974 Kinshasa, Zaire, Stadium
To Know You Is To Love You (4:10); I Believe In Myself (5:52); Why I Sing The Blues (6:24); Ain't Nobody Home (3:08); Sweet Sixteen (6:47); The Thrill Is Gone (4:34); Guess Who (4:52); I Like To Live The Love I Sing About (4:09).
Officially released on VHS video and DVD LIVE IN AFRICA (and other titles). B.B. King performed just before the famous boxing contest between Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier at the Kinshasa Stadium. The enthusiastic mainly black audience adds to the magic of that recording which was professionally filmed.

1978 Chicago, Illinois, Park West
I Need My Baby; Don't Answer The Door/Nobody Loves Me But My Mother/I Need You So Bad/Strange Things Happening/Why I Sing The Blues; Night Life; When It All Comes Down; Hold On; Outside Help; Never Make Your Move Too Soon; The Thrill Is Gone; I Just
Can't Leave Your Love Alone.
1978 Toronto, Canada, The Forum
Instrumental (4:30); Night Life (6:35); Going Out Of My Mind (4:55); Walking Dr Bill (3:44); Instrumental (6:23); Why I Sing The Blues (5:32); Never Make Your Move Too Soon (6:16); The Thrill Is Gone (6:06); Instrumental (1:30).
9 April 1978 Boston, Massachussetts, St Paul’s Mall
Caldonia (6:39); How Blue Can You Get? (4:34); Crying Won’t Help (6:23); Instrumental (5:23); Why I Sing The Blues (8:05); Every Day I Have The Blues (8:57); Instrumental (5:50); Sweet Little Angel (3:14); Instrumental (4:26); Have A Little Faith (6:46); Going Out Of My Mind (2:16); Outside Help (4:26); The Thrill Is Gone (5:53); Guess Who (4:16); I Got My Mojo Working (3:33).
This concert features some rarely played songs but the sound quality appears to be uneven (though listenable). The performance is excellent though, and B.B. King is accompanied by harmonica player Dee Dee Bridgewater which he should have done more often because it blends excellently with his sound. Unfortunately there are many bad sounding recordings of the soundboard source in circulation but the pristine version is a must!
22 June (1978 or 1979 or 1982) New York, Bottom Line, KBFH special with George Benson and Johnny & Edgar Winter
Caldonia (4:55); How Blue Can You Get? (4:32); Goin’ Down Slow (6:23); I Got Some Help I Don’t Need (14:47); Just A Little Love (11:10); The Thrill Is Gone (6:52).
Traditionally the KBFH concerts were recorded brilliantly, some of them even in quadraphonic sound. That recording featuring George Benson and Johnny & Edgar Winter is no exception and makes the record one of the very best official live recordings.
October 1978 London, Hammersmith Odeon
Caledonia (8:59); Why I Sing The Blues; Medley: Three o’Clock Blues/It's My Own Fault; Rock Me Baby; Sweet Sixteen; Don't Answer The Door; Nobody Loves Me But My Mother (15:56); Never Make Your Move Too Soon (4:48); When It All Comes Down (6:52); Hold On (6:38); Band introductions/The Thrill Is Gone (8:49); Instrumental (2:07); Outside Help (5:08).
Another radio broadcast highlight, this time from the BBC. In 2008, five songs from that concert (Caldonia, I Love To Live The Life, Night Life, When It All Comes Down, and The Thrill Is Gone) were officially reseased on the album LIVE AT THE BBC. But one of the highlights not yet officially released is the rarely played song 'Hold on'.
1979 Oxford, Mississippi, University of Mississippi
Intro/B.B. King Blues Theme; Caldonia; Blues Medley: Don't Answer The Door/You Done Lost Your Good Thing Now/I Need Your Love So Bad/Nobody Loves Me But My Mother; Hold On; Outside Help; Darlin’ You Know I Love You; When I’m Wrong; The Thrill Is Gone; Never Make Your Move Too Soon; Three O’Clock In The Morning; Rock Me Baby; Guess Who; I Just Can’t Leave Your Love Alone.
Official release NOW APPEARING AT OLE MISS. This is not really a live recording. And that’s the problem about the whole album. To ‘sweeten’ the sound the producers later overdubbed guitar parts, percussion, and strings. It’s a catastrophy and destroys the otherwise very good live recordings completely. It is one of the worst live albums of any major artist. Why don’t they release the undubbed album for the fans who appreciate it ?
19 April 1979 Atlanta, Georgia, Great Southeast Music Hall
Caledonia; Sweet Little Angel; Jam; Don't Answer The Door; You're Mean; Why I Sing The Blues; Outside Help; Made You Move To Soon; I'm No Me Without You; The Thrill Is Gone/Hold On; Jam 1; Jam 2.
A concert where Eric Clapton joined B.B. King on stage was recorded and broadcast. Unfortunately my copy was so hissy that it’s not a pleasure to listen to.

5 July 1980 Velden, Austria, Jazz Holidays Velden
Let The Good Times Roll/Nobody Loves Me But My Mother (8:07); Outside Help (6:40); You Better Not Look Down (6:36); When It All Comes Down (11:15); Never Make Your Move Too Soon (11:56); The Thril Is Gone (10:39); Instrumental (17:49).
On this excellent soundboard recording B.B. King is in a very good mood, stretching out to very long versions of the songs. But generally this concert is rather standard fare.

Intro (2:28); Every Day I Have The Blues (2:11); Sweet Little Angel (5:21); Let The Good Times Roll (4:53); Don’t Answer The Door (5:17); I’d Like To Live The Life I Sing About (4:12): Instrumental (7:05); Instrumental (8:27); I Just Can’t Leave Your Love Alone (7:00).
1983 Dallas, Texas, Nick’s Uptown
Everyday I Have the Blues (4:13); Night Life (4:43); You Better Not Look Down (6:26); Never Make Your Move Too Soon (5:35); Sell My Monkey (3:03); Love Me Tender (4:02); Inflation Blues (4:16); The Thrill is Gone (4:21); There Must Be A Better World SomeWhere (5:56).
Released officially on a DVD LIVE AT NICK’S this is a worthwhile addition to the B.B. King live catalogue because of some rarely played songs. Even a well-known standard like ‘Love me tender’ is different from the classic Elvis version.

28 January 1983 Cannes, France, Palace of Festivals Theatre
BB King Theme (10:54); Why I Sing the Blues (4:53); Darling You Know I Love You (5:08); Caledonia (3:28); All Over Again (7:14); Everyday I Have the Blues (4:51); Sweet Little Angel (5:55); Jam with Dave Brubek (13:06); The Thrill is Gone (5:00); Guess Who (5:47); Payin' the Cost to be the Boss (5:00).
These great recordings were released semi-officially on some different licensed CDs. You can find some of them in the cheap sales but each one has only a part of the concert so you have to buy at least two CDs if you want more songs. In February 2008, part of the concert was released again on the CD LIVE - AT THE PALAIS DE CONGRESS, CANNES, FRANCE, 1983. However, there is also a complete version. They were worth it. B.B. King is in fine form and in great mood, as are his band and the guest stars. A great live album with a terrific version of ‘Guess who’!
10 February 1983 Boston, Massachusetts, Boston Arena
Let The Good Times Roll (4:17); Don't Answer The Door (5:19); Paying The Cost To Be The Boss (3:27); Going Out Of My Mind (5:27); Guess Who (5:59); Story Of Lucille (4:18); Caldonia (4:10); All Over Again (7:20); The Thrill Is Gone (8:01).
Semi-official release ALL OVER AGAIN. The Boston concert, a very good one, was released on licensed CDs.

2 May 1984 Bern, Switzerland, Jazzfestival Bern '84
I Got A Mind To Give Up Living (5:52); Band Introduction (4:04); Instrumental (3:32); B.B. King Intro (1:43); Rock Me Baby (10:02); Guess Who (9:17); Instrumental (4:26); Instrumental (5:15); Instrumental (4:24); Since I Met You Baby (5:39); I Just Can’t Leave Your Love Alone (vocals: Debra Bosten) (4:42); Uncle Sam (8:46); The Thrill Is Gone (8:25); Stay Out All Night (10:25).
This concert's highlights are 'Guess who' with a stunning trumpet solo, and 'Since I Met You Baby' which sounds better in that compact version than on the singalongs elsewhere.
8 July 1984 Wiesen, Austria, Jazz Summit
Sweet little angel (5:51); Instrumental (5:33); Rock me baby (11:04); Night life (instrumental) (6:54); Caledonia (4:33); When it all comes down (3:07); You better not look down (6:25); I just can’t leave your love alone (4:41); Evil gal [vocals: Debra Bosten] (5:06); How blue can you get? Instrumental (5:20); You Upset Me Baby; Three O‘Clock In The Morning; Woke Up This Morning (5:30); Since I Met You Baby; Rock Me Baby; Instrumental; Jam Session (17:22).
The introduction, ’Woke up this morning’ and the Jam session were released officially on a CD series LIVE AT MONTREUX especially for the Swiss airline Swissair (which does no longer exist). The CD only includes these songs featuring B.B. King besides recordings from other artists.

Official release LIVE IN SAN QUENTIN (1990). Another very good concert recorded in a prison. Why did they have to put on a studio recording of ‘Peace To The World ?‘ as track 10 ? Didn’t they have enough good material from the San Quentin show ?

'Why I Sing The Blues', 'Don’t Answer The Door' and a short excerpt from 'Rock me Baby' were broadcast worldwide live as part of the famous LIVE AID show. But the entire live recording is superb.

Official release on laser disc A NIGHT OF BLISTERING BLUES. An all-star concert was professionally recorded and filmed. There is an original CD with the soundtrack on it but it is not clear whether it is a licensed release or a bootleg. But it was really an event when B.B. King played with all those people, and the variety of music makes this recording worthwhile.

Let The Good Times Roll (3:45); The Thrill Is Gone (with Luciano Pavarotti) (4:40).
Officially released on the CD PAVAROTTI AND FRIENDS FOR GUATEMALA AN’D KOSOVO. Most probably this is no real live recording because most of the artists sang along to pre-recorded tapes which are also listed for B.B. King. The version of ‘Let the good times roll’, played without brass, could be very interesting and swings really but is marred by some female background vocals. And you better forget ‘The thrill is gone’ which as a duet is syrupy and just horrible. This recording is for die-hard fans only.

Although this is an excellent soundboard as usual from the Montreux Jazz Festival, B.B. King's voice now shows some strains. In concert he was still great, and his skills as a top entertainer which equals those as a performer shine throughout the album. Unfortunately my copy has a whistling tone in the background which disturbs the listening pleasure. For me, the highlight is his version of ‘Key to the highway’.

Official release LIVE AT THE APOLLO. B.B. King playing with a great brass band seemed like a very good idea but when this was recorded on the last night of a tour his voice was strained and sometimes sounds a bit hoarse. Perhaps there would have been concerts where he was in better shape.

Official release B.B. KING AND SONS LIVE. The intention of that concert was to bring together B.B. King with some of Japan's young top musicians. The resulting top-notch recording was released by the magazine GUITAR PLAYER as an extra gift. They should have released it officially. B.B. matches perfectly with his Japanese scholars and they play some new songs.

Official release of ‘Let The Good Times Roll‘ and ‘The Thrill Is Gone‘ on rare ‚ticket‘ CD for a BB King concert at Luxemburg. King shines throughout.
