The Van Morrison Soundboard recordings

By Eberhard Fritz

There is probably no other major artist whose musical career can be followed so thoroughly by the radio broadcasts he allowed to be recorded and spread over the media than Van Morrison. From the very start of his solo career in 1967 he has always regarded radio and television as so important that many of his concerts were recorded and broadcast in pristine quality. This is quite contrary to his public image where he is said to be so critical about the media. But then, Van has always emphasized his special connection with radio, from which he learned since his early age. So, although he generally opposes bootlegs, he has contributed heavily to an almost complete documentation of his concert activities thoughout the years which stands alongside his officially released body of work.
W
hen I first read some years ago that already over 100 soundboard recordings were supposed to exist I almost couldn’t believe it. So I began to collect information, and it proved to be correct. All those soundboard recordings are very important as an addition to the official catalogue because Van’s concerts are documented so very well. Contrary to so many other artists his radio recordings are unaltered except for the necessary editing.
Moreover, there are plenty of complete (or almost complete) concert recordings broadcasts. Consider only the Swiss radio broadcasts from the Montreux Jazz Festival from 1974, 1980, 1984, 1989, and 1990, which represent a magnificient overview over Van’s career during this period despite the very weak appearance in 1974 (one of his most terrible concerts ever). But particularly the 1980 and even more the 1990 concerts count among Van’s best live recordings. Some fans even consider the 1990 radio broadcast as the best concert recording ever. You can argue about that but it is out of question that some radio broadcasts surpass the official live albums – except for It’s too late to stop now, of course – by far.
Other great concerts include the early recording of the 1970 San Francisco performance, followed a year later by a concert at the Pacific High Studios with many highlights. These two recordings represent the very early period in Van’s recording career and are completed by two complete concert broadcasts from the small Lion’s Share Club in San Francisco from February 1973, shortly before his legendary tour with the Caledonia Soul Orchestra, where additional live recordings to the fantastic official album It’s too late to stop now appear on bootlegs.
After Van had taken a break for several years he returned to the stage in 1978 and was in great form, as is shown by the radio broadcasts from the Roxy in Los Angeles (of which Warner Brothers released a promotional live album) and from the Bottom Line in New York. The 1980’s are represented by the magnificient ‘Rockpalast’ concerts at Essen (1982) and Cannes, France (1984) which actually are far better than the official album Live at the Grand Opera Belfast. Van continued to allow an annual concert broadcast throughout the 1980’s, including performances with Big Bands. But his tour with the Chieftains in order to promote the common album Irish Heartbeat only produced a live monaural soundboard which means that this era remains below the usual standards.
Things look even more difficult for the years 1991 through 1995 with a remarkable lack of radio or TV bradcasts. That period can only be covered by audience recordings, some of which are very good. In fact, Van Morrison released some tracks from a 1991 recording of his Utrecht concert on two Maxi CDs but wouldn’t allow concerts to be broadcast for several years. However, in 1995 he returned gloriously with four longer broadcasts, highlighted by the last one from this year: the complete concert from Dublin’s Point Depot in December 1995. This must be regarded as one of Van’s very best radio broadcasts where he gave an overview of his entire career and had it recorded in brilliant sound quality which becomes apparent in a remastered version released some years after.
Subsequently, Van Morrison has always from time to time allowed for concert recordings to be broadcast. The list of full-length broadcasts (complete concerts or a greater part of a concert) is most impressive: Memphis 1996; Den Haag 1996; Leverkusen 1996; Belfast 1997; Aalen 1997; Playa del Ingles 1997; San Jose 1998; Duesseldorf 1998; Loreley 1999; Oslo 2000; Basel 2000; Warszawa 2001; Berlin 2002; Vienne 2002; Lugano 2002; Vittoria 2002; Hamburg 2003; Malvern 2003. With these recordings there is a complete overview over Van's concert activities since the mid-1990's.

Included in this compilation are the official live recordings on albums and Maxi CDs. Any track which was not recorded in front of an audience was not included.
